Episode One — Pebbling, the Origin Story, and Being Findable

What happened on the premiere
Three years ago this month my assistant broke up with me — her book of business got too busy, it happens, it's normal. On a 28-minute flight from Detroit to Grand Rapids I decided to trade teaching for help instead of hiring another busy agent. One Google form on a Friday. Sixty applicants by Saturday. That became the internship, the internship became the cohort, the cohort became the class I've taught about twelve times — and this year it outgrew itself into The How to Travel Agent Show — Mondays at 11am ET, every week.
The teaching this week: pebbling. Adélie penguins pick out one specific pebble for one specific penguin — and that's the whole job. The client who's food allergic. The train trip to Spain someone mentioned a year and a half ago. AI can't do this — it tries, and it's very bad at it. AI is not a threat to your job unless you let it be. The pebbles are the part no technology takes from you.

Your challenge this week
The one from the show: be findable. Open an incognito window and search yourself the way a client would. If a stranger can't connect your name to your phone number, email, or website — or can't find your personal pages, not just the business page nobody knows about — fix it this week. Done looks like: you searched yourself, found the gap, and closed it. Tag How to Travel Agent and tag me. We will be cheering.
